Contech is tooled to cast and machine 1.4 million of these 6 pound rack and pinion housings per year.  These fully machined and leak tested parts are supplied as part of a steering gear for the light truck market.  These parts require adherence to metallurgical hardness properties as well as routine porosity and dimensional requirements.

Contech is tooled for 4 parts in a family of right and left hand drive rack and pinions.  The parts are cast in multiple cavity dies and fully machined taking advantage of the synergy of similar parts to reduce the cost of tooling and processing.  These parts require adherence to metallurgical hardness properties as well as routine porosity and dimensional requirements.  Our competitive production process has allowed us to serve customer locations in Europe and North America.

Application: Truck

Contech is tooled to cast and trim.  Product requirements include tight porosity standards as well as pressure tight requirements after machining.  This quality expectation is met with a multi-cavity die utilizing pressure pins in critical areas and rigorous process control.

Aluminum has replaced cast iron as the ideal material choice for power steering pumps.  The extreme hydraulic pressures produced by power steering pumps require high-density pressure tight castings.  Contech’s lightweight, high-integrity castings are the perfect solution.  The tight machining tolerances required by power steering pumps are well suited for Contech’s machining expertise.  Contech has been casting and machining lightweight aluminum pumps for over a decade.

Contech is tooled to cast and fully machine, wash and leak test this part.  The P2000 process was chosen because the wall thickness and strength requirements for this Class 8 truck application required extraordinary mechanical properties in a new application.  The alloy selection coupled with the P2000 casting process allows for heat treating for even higher mechanical properties if necessary.
